Nursing Case Report of a Patient with Temporomandibular Joint Disorder of Wind-Cold-Dampness Obstruction Pattern Treated with Chinese Herbal Ointment Massage Combined with Moxa Stick Moxibustion
This article summarizes a specialized Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) nursing protocol involving Chinese herbal ointment massage combined with moxa stick moxibustion for a patient with temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) of wind-cold-dampness obstruction pattern. Guided by the therapeutic principle of "warming meridians to unblock collaterals, dispelling wind and eliminating dampness," a custom-formulated Tongbi ointment containing herbs like Radix Saposhnikoviae (Fangfeng) and Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae (Qinjiao) was applied via acupoint-specific massage. This was synergistically combined with moxibustion at acupoints including Xiaguan (ST7), Jiache (ST6), and Ashi points. Adjunctive interventions included orofacial functional training and emotional regulation therapy, collectively targeting pain relief and functional restoration. The regimen integrates transdermal drug delivery with thermophysiological effects, establishing a novel tri-dimensional therapeutic model ("herbal-moxa-exercise") that transcends conventional monotherapy limitations. This protocol offers a safe and effective TCM external treatment pathway for wind-cold-dampness obstruction-type TMD, demonstrating significant clinical value in mitigating long-term oral medication dependency and reducing surgical risks. It provides novel insights for clinical nursing management of this condition.
