Nursing Report on Traditional Chinese Medicine Soaking and Compress Therapy for a Patient with Pulmonary Embolism Complicated by Bilateral Lower Limb Edema
This paper summarizes the nursing efficacy and experience of using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) soaking and compress therapy for a patient with pulmonary embolism complicated by bilateral lower limb edema. Pulmonary embolism can trigger pulmonary arterial hypertension, which elevates right ventricular pressure, exacerbates right heart load, obstructs venous return and consequently induces lower limb edema. On the basis of Western medicine symptomatic treatments including anticoagulation and anti-inflammation, this patient was diagnosed with the syndrome of qi deficiency, blood stasis and water retention through TCM syndrome differentiation. The patient was treated with external TCM soaking and compress therapy combined with comprehensive nursing interventions, which significantly alleviated the symptoms of lower limb edema.
