Nursing Report on the Treatment of a Glioma Patient with Headache Using Traditional Chinese Medicine Herbal Cap Therapy
This study investigated the clinical nursing efficacy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal cap therapy in alleviating glioma-related headaches and its impact on patients' emotional state and sleep quality. A hospitalized patient diagnosed with high-grade glioma accompanied by persistent headache was selected for the study. A specially designed herbal cap filled with powdered Chinese herbs—including Chrysanthemum indicum, scorpion (Buthus martensii), Paris polyphylla, borneol, vinegar-processed myrrh, processed Polygala tenuifolia, and Dioscorea bulbifera—was applied externally. The patient wore the cap twice daily or continuously at night for a 10-day treatment course. Efficacy was evaluated using headache Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) scores, sleep quality, emotional manifestations, and skin reactions. Results showed that the patient's headache score decreased from 6 to 3, with relief of head distension and pain, improved nighttime sleep, enhanced daytime mental state and verbal expression, and no adverse skin reactions. The patient and family expressed satisfaction with the outcomes and requested an extended treatment course. The study demonstrates that TCM herbal cap therapy, as a simple, safe, and non-invasive external treatment, effectively relieves tumor-related headaches while improving sleep and emotional well-being, particularly suitable for elderly, frail, or surgery-resistant patients.
