Nursing Experience of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine in Treating an Elderly Patient with Influenza A Complicated by Pulmonary Infection
This article summarizes the nursing experience of integrated Traditional Chinese and Western medicine (TCM-WM) in managing an elderly patient with influenza A complicated by pulmonary infection. In response to the identified nursing problems, including ineffective airway clearance, impaired gas exchange, hyperthermia, risk for impaired skin integrity, imbalanced nutrition, activity intolerance, and anxiety, conventional Western medicine nursing was implemented in conjunction with TCM pattern differentiation-based nursing. Western medicine nursing focused on airway management, oxygen therapy, infection prevention and control, symptomatic care, and complication prevention. Guided by the holistic concept, TCM nursing was tailored to the identified phlegm-heat stagnating in the lung pattern and incorporated oral administration of Qingjin Huatan Decoction, external application of a phlegm-resolving herbal plaster, and auricular acupoint bean pressing therapy, supplemented by dietary regulation and emotional care. Following the intervention, the patient's infection was effectively controlled, body temperature returned to normal, cough and expectoration symptoms were significantly alleviated, oxygen saturation remained stable, and the patient was successfully discharged. The practice demonstrates that integrated TCM-WM nursing can effectively control disease progression, reduce the risk of complications, and enhance rehabilitation quality, providing a reference for the care of elderly high-risk patients with influenza A complicated by pulmonary infection.
