Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Nursing for a Patient with Colon Cancer and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Case Report
This report summarizes the perioperative nursing experience of a 63-year-old patient with moderately differentiated sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and a previous cerebral infarction. Four principal nursing concerns were identified: chronic pain, a high risk of infection, blood glucose fluctuations, and nutritional imbalance. Western medicine–based nursing interventions included standardized pain management, multi-catheter infection prevention and control, individualized glycemic management, and a stepwise, stage-specific approach to nutritional support. In accordance with the patient’s dampness-heat and blood-stasis syndrome, traditional Chinese medicine–based nursing interventions included auricular acupressure with seed kernels, suspended moxibustion, and topical herbal patches applied to selected acupoints. These interventions were integrated with oral Chinese herbal medicine, emotional regulation, and dietary guidance based on traditional Chinese medicine principles. Following comprehensive nursing care throughout the perioperative period, the patient’s postoperative pain subsided rapidly, and no surgical-site, catheter-related, or urinary tract infections occurred. Blood glucose levels remained within the target range, gastrointestinal function and nutritional indicators progressively improved, and the patient ultimately made a satisfactory recovery and was discharged. This case provides a practical reference for the perioperative delivery of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine nursing to elderly patients with colon cancer, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and multiple comorbidities.
