Nursing Experience of TCM Tongue Function Training Combined with Auricular Acupressure in Intervening a Patient with Dysphagia during Convalescent Stage of Cerebral Infarction
This article summarizes the nursing experience of a patient with dysphagia during the convalescent stage of cerebral infarction who received traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) tongue function training combined with auricular acupressure. The patient was admitted due to persistent dysphagia following cerebral infarction. On admission, the Kubota water swallowing test graded level IV, accompanied by obvious choking on water, high aspiration risk, and nutritional risk. On the basis of routine treatment and rehabilitation, TCM tongue function training combined with auricular acupressure was implemented, supplemented by swallowing safety management, syndrome-differentiated dietary guidance, psychological care, and continuity-of-care guidance upon discharge. After 14 consecutive days of intervention, the patient's Kubota water swallowing test improved from level IV to level II, with markedly reduced choking during fluid intake and the ability to safely consume paste-like and semi-liquid diets. No complications such as aspiration pneumonia or asphyxia occurred during hospitalization. Telephone follow-up conducted for four weeks after discharge indicated that the patient consistently adhered to home-based training, with continued improvement in swallowing function. This combined protocol is simple to perform, safe, and non-invasive, suggesting that TCM tongue function training combined with auricular acupressure is feasible for patients with dysphagia during the convalescent stage of cerebral infarction, and providing a reference for integrated Chinese and Western medicine nursing care in similar patients.
