Nursing Experience of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine for a Patient with Severe Viral Encephalitis Complicated by Autoimmune Encephalitis
This paper summarizes the nursing experience of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine (TCM-WM) applied to a patient recovering from viral encephalitis complicated by autoimmune encephalitis. The patient initially presented with headache and fever at the onset of illness, followed by nausea and vomiting, and subsequently developed abnormal mental and behavioral manifestations and incoherent speech. After admission, the patient's condition progressed to impaired consciousness and complete quadriplegia, accompanied by respiratory failure. Based on conventional Western medical interventions, TCM-specific nursing techniques—including acupoint application with Chinese herbal medicine, acupoint massage, and acupuncture—were implemented concurrently, along with syndrome differentiation-based dietary guidance, rehabilitation training, and psychological interventions. Ultimately, the patient was successfully weaned from mechanical ventilation, regained consciousness, recovered autonomous movement of all four limbs, and experienced a reduced frequency of epileptic seizures. This case demonstrates that for patients with viral encephalitis complicated by autoimmune encephalitis, the application of TCM-specific nursing techniques combined with conventional Western medicine nursing can effectively improve neurological function and psychiatric symptoms, promote disease recovery, and is worthy of clinical promotion and application.
