Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Nursing for a Patient with Sigmoid Colon Perforation and Septic Shock: A Case Report
This case report retrospectively summarizes the nursing care provided to a patient presenting with perforation of multiple sigmoid colon diverticula complicated by septic shock, and analyzes the comprehensive nursing requirements associated with the patient’s critical pathophysiological conditions, including shock, impaired gas exchange, ineffective airway clearance, hyperthermia, and nutritional imbalance. Furthermore, this report explores the clinical value of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine nursing in the management of such complex cases. The patient initially underwent emergency sigmoid colon perforation repair combined with a transverse colostomy and was subsequently admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), where septic shock and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) developed, necessitating a second endotracheal intubation. The nursing care centered on respiratory support, infection control, and nutritional support, encompassing meticulous airway management, strict contact isolation, and a sequential enteral nutrition strategy, complemented by auricular acupressure to promote the recovery of gastrointestinal function. The patient’s condition ultimately improved, and she was transferred to a general ward for continued treatment. This case highlights the substantial advantages of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine nursing in the management of critically ill patients with complex pathophysiological conditions, and suggests that traditional Chinese medicine–based nursing interventions may play a particularly prominent role in promoting gastrointestinal function recovery in such critically ill patients.
