Nursing Report on the Application of Moxibustion Therapy to Improve Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis in an Elderly Patient
This case study explores the effectiveness of a comprehensive intervention based on TCM syndrome differentiation and nursing care for an elderly bedridden patient with incontinence-associated dermatitis. The patient, due to prolonged bed rest, developed spleen deficiency and impaired digestive function, leading to fecal incontinence and subsequent perianal skin erosion. In addition to standard perianal skin care, dietary guidance, and health education, the concept of TCM syndrome-based nursing was introduced. A dual approach targeting both root and symptoms was adopted: one aspect involved moxibustion at abdominal acupoints such as Zhongwan and Tianshu to strengthen the spleen and consolidate the intestines, thereby reducing diarrhea at its source; the other involved local moxibustion around the perianal area to warm and promote blood circulation, remove dampness, and resolve necrotic tissue, thus accelerating wound healing. After systematic intervention, the patient's diarrhea was effectively controlled, perianal skin lesions gradually healed, and overall condition significantly improved. This case demonstrates that integrating TCM syndrome differentiation nursing with conventional care can substantially enhance outcomes in managing incontinence-associated dermatitis, offering valuable insights for clinical nursing practice.
