A Case Report of Manual Lactation Expression Combined with Traditional Chinese Medicine Moving Cupping Therapy for Acute Mastitis
This paper summarizes the nursing experience of treating one case of acute mastitis with manual lactation expression combined with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) moving cupping therapy. The patient had been breastfeeding for 64 days and presented with redness, swelling, and pain in the upper outer quadrant of the left breast accompanied by impaired milk discharge. Following consultation, manual lactation expression was performed to unblock the lactiferous ducts and discharge the accumulated breast milk, while TCM moving cupping therapy was concurrently administered to harmonize the zang-fu organs, dredge the meridians and collaterals, and promote qi circulation to dissipate masses. Simultaneously, guidance on diet, daily routine, and breastfeeding, along with emotional care, was provided. After the combined intervention and systematic nursing care, the patient's breast swelling and pain subsided, milk discharge became unobstructed, body temperature returned to normal, and normal breastfeeding was resumed without abscess formation. Manual lactation expression combined with TCM moving cupping therapy, supplemented by holistic nursing care, can rapidly relieve the symptoms of acute mastitis, demonstrating favorable safety and patient compliance, and is effective in enhancing breastfeeding rates.
