Nursing Experience of Alleviating Discomfort Symptoms in an Elderly Terminal Multiple Myeloma Patient Based on the "One-Qi Circulation" Theory with Traditional Chinese Medicine External Therapies
This article reports the nursing experience of orderly integrating traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) external therapies based on the "One-Qi Circulation" theory to stabilize the qi movement of ascending, descending, exiting, and entering in an elderly terminal multiple myeloma patient, thereby alleviating the patient's discomfort symptoms. The patient was a 90-year-old female presenting with multiple distressing symptoms, including severe bone pain, sleep disturbance, high nutritional risk, extreme frailty, as well as anxiety and depression. On the basis of conventional Western symptomatic supportive nursing care, the intervention focused on the core pathogenesis of "dysfunction of the middle jiao, stagnation of liver qi, and dysregulation of qi movement," with the therapeutic principle of "regulating the middle earth, soothing the liver wood, and promoting the free flow of qi movement." Guided by the "One-Qi Circulation" theory, TCM external techniques, including stone needle therapy, hot herbal compress, and head scraping, were sequentially applied. After 12 days of nursing intervention, the patient's bone pain, sleep quality, nutritional status, and emotional state were significantly improved, and the quality of life and comfort during the terminal stage were notably enhanced. This case suggests that integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine nursing combined with TCM external therapies holds clinical application value for relieving complex discomfort in elderly patients with terminal-stage hematological malignancies.
